This may sound really stupid but are they the same place. i’ve been there but sometimes people call it South beach and sometimes they call it Miami beach. Are they the same or different, if so how are they different?

They are both under the jurisdiction of Miami Beach Police. South Beach is more of an enclave, if that makes sense. The mailing address would Miami Beach. Kind of like a NY neighborhood. TriBeCa is still Manhattan, but it is a particular neighborhood or community of the city. Here is how wikipedia describes it: South Beach is the section of Miami Beach, Florida that encompasses the southernmost 23 blocks of an island separating the Atlantic Ocean and Biscayne Bay.

Like the person above said So beach is a section of Miami. So Beach is a smaller area made up of like 30 blocks. If you lived in So Beach your city address would be Miami, FL. For example if I lived in the SoHo section of Manhattan my address would not say Soho, NY it would say NY, NY.
I think you hit MIami beach and leave So Beach once you hit about 40th and Collins? or close to there.

Miami Beach is a City of about 100,000 pop. that occupies the south 8 miles of a barrier island off of Miami plus some nearby islands joined to it by causeways & bridges. South Beach is the southern part of that city from about 23d Street south to the end of the island.
