I am considering moving to Miami, but I heard there are alot of hurricanes. What is the place in Miami and surrounding areas to live where there is not a lot of damage after bad weather? What other bad weather do you get? Are these areas safe as far as crime also?

Since I am in Florida, it woul dbe a good idea to live at least 10 miles from the coast.

Yeah the safest (relative term) to live in Miami is in the southern part of the county. Kendall isn’t too bad and it is farther away from the coast. Also the farther west you go in the south the newer the neighborhood will be. As far as the hurricanes go it is obviously better to live faarther from the coast but at the same time it is a lot of luck because if the eye of a strong storm passes by you there will still be damage no matter how far inland you are.
Also, does the neigborhood you want to live in have to be in Miami. As a general rule (not always) the counties to the north are better the farther north you go. Broward has more nicer neighborhoods, Palm Beach ever more so.
Therefore, for the mixture of crime, quality of neighborhood and hurrincanestorm surge protection I would pick southwest Dade for you.

1. There are no more hurricanes than in any other South Atlantic coastline location. 2. If you’re that concerned you want to live in a non-flood zone at least several miles inland within an urban service area & within walking distance of a Publix food store (which all have emergency generators). If you can, live near a Hospital as their electrical service is restored first. 3. Make sure the place in which you live has hurricane shutters.

Hello,
We actually havent had a hurricane in 2 years. There is not a certain place that has more damage than the other regarding weather, it really depends on where the storm hits and how strong it is. Usually the beaches is the worst place to live seeing as though the hurricanes come from the water.. South beach and Miami Beach are usually evacuated is a strong storm hits.
As for crime level, there are many very nice neighborhoods like Pinecrest which is mostly families. The crime level I think is high in areas like Downtown, Coconut Grove, Miami beach, South Beach. Pretty much the places where you go to party the crime level is high.
Good Luck

I wasnt born yet during Andrew, but at that time my parents were living in Downtown Dadeland on Kendall Drive. They were living in a apartment complex and there was not a lot of damage to their place, thank god. All the windows leaked a bit, but thats pretty much it. I’ve lived all my life in Kendall and i’ve never had any damage happen to my home. During Irene my bedroom window leaked also… but that was it. A couple trees collapsed outside. No flooding or anything like that. Kendall is a pretty safe area. My elementary school was on lockdown once because of an armed car robbery, and my middle school was once on lockdown for a nearby armed grocery store robbery. Those are the only two incidents i can think of. Hopefully, this was of help to you
